Poker - Game Guides and Reviews

Poker is one of the most popular card games and been around for more than centuries that makes its origin more indefinite. Poker's broad and diverse origins are responsible to its fun and complexity. Poker has developed from many various games along history, borrowing only the best features from each game.

Poker is by far the most fascinating gambling game in the world because it offers a perfect combination between luck and skill. It also has a great advantage - you do not play versus the house, only against other players. This eliminates the house advantage that the casino has in any other game and leaves you facing only the skill of all the other players around the table.

Poker has been a popular game for well over a hundred years, in one form or another, but its current popularity online is largely to do with the establishment of the World Series of Poker. For only few years, online poker has become a mainstay in American culture as it rapidly gains popularity throughout the world. What once was a casual means of gambling in the comfort of one's home has quickly become a way of life. No need to worry about travel expenses, tipping, or other distractions associated with live poker play... just good old-fashioned poker played from the comfort of your desktop or laptop computer.

Poker Hand Rankings

One of the most important in the game of Poker is to have the knowledge on Hand Rankings. Players who are learning how to play poker must not only memorize this list, but also understand which cards comprise each hand ranking. Knowing this information is the best way to begin a successful career in both casino poker and online poker, as it applies to every type of poker game from high stakes poker to free online poker.

Royal Flush - A straight from a ten to an ace with all five cards of the same suit. In poker all suits are ranked equally.

Straight Flush - Any straight with all five cards of the same suit

Four of a Kind - Any four cards of the same rank. If two players share the same Four of a Kind, the bigger fifth card (known as the kicker) decides who wins

Full House - Any three cards of the same rank together with any two cards of the same rank.

Flush - Any five cards of the same suit (not consecutive). The highest card of the five determines the rank of the flush.

Straight - Any five consecutive cards of different suits. Aces can count as either a high or a low card.

Three of a Kind - Any three cards of the same rank.

Two Pair - Any two cards of the same rank together with another two cards of the same rank.

One Pair - Any two cards of the same rank.

High Card - Any hand not in the above-mentioned hands.

Poker Betting Options

One of the basics involved in poker is to understand the betting options. No one can play poker with even a minimal level of competence if they don't understand poker hand rankings and poker betting. Players in a poker game act in turn, in clockwise rotation (acting out of turn can negatively affect other players). When it is a player's turn to act, the first verbal declaration or action he takes binds him to his choice of action; this rule prevents a player from changing his action after seeing how other players react to his initial action.

Open - The act of making the first voluntary bet in a betting round is called opening the round. On the first betting round, it is also called opening the pot, though in variants where blind bets are common, the blind bets "open" and other players call and/or raise the "big blind" bet.

Check - If no one has yet opened the betting round, a player may pass or check, which is equivalent to calling the current bet of zero. When checking, a player declines to make a bet; this indicates that he does not wish to open, but does wish to keep his cards and retain the right to call or raise later in the same round if an opponent opens.

Call - betting enough to match what has been bet since the last time you bet. An example would be if you bet 25 cents and somebody than bid 35 cents when to you you would owe 10 cents . If you Call than you would put the amount that you owed into the pot and you would stay in the hand.

Raise - when you raise you first put enough in the pot to match what has already been bet and then you would raise the pot by putting an additional amount in (a friendly game would usually have a limit to how much money you could raise). So lets say the initial bet was 25 cents, you would have to put in 25 cents and than say I'll raise you another 25 cents. Now the other players will either Call, Raise, or fold.

Fold - dropping out of the current hand and losing the possibility of winning the pot. You don't have to put money in and you would only lose the ante, if its on the first turn, or whatever you put in the pot later. Sometimes it is just better to get out then waste good money on bad cards.

When it comes to online poker, betting is quite easy and simple because you only need is to click on the button that corresponds to the action you want to take.
